How to Make Natural Deodorant Without Baking Soda (vegan!)

Keep odours away, skin dry and bacteria at bay with this natural vegan deodorant recipe, without baking soda.

Why your skin will love this natural deodorant

  • Absorbs odours naturally with arrowroot powder instead of baking soda, which can be irritating for many people
  • It has more of a creamy balm texture, as opposed to a solid deodorant stick, so it is easy to apply and soft on skin
  • Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial, odour-absorbing, and moisturizing
  • Contains probiotics to help crowd out the bad, odour-causing bacteria on skin, and populate it with the good bacteria
  • It absorbs quickly leaving a light, powdery feel (not sticky!!!!)
  • It is made with vegan soy wax, which is moisturizing without clogging pores
  • It is free from the typical toxins you might see in store-bought deodorants, like aluminum, fragrance, talc, parabens, and dyes
  • It is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and free from packaging
  • You can use it on any area of the body, including feet, under the breasts, behind the knees, and underarms

What you will need to make this natural deodorant with probiotics

Equipment

  • Stainless steel bowl
  • Small pot
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • mixing bowl and spoon
  • Small 2oz glass jar with lid (you can use deodorant tubes, but you might have to add more soy wax to make it more firm)

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp arrowroot powder
  • 2 probiotic capsules (any brand will do)
  • 1 Tbsp soy wax pellets or flakes
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 4 drops Lavender or Tea Tree essential oil (optional). Make sure you are using pure lavender essential oil, not โ€œfragranceโ€ oil

How to make a natural deodorant balm

Fill a small pot with 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil

Place a stainless steel bowl over the top of the pot and pour in the soy wax pellets. They will start to melt as the bowl heats up

As soon as the wax is melted (should take just a couple of minutes), add in the coconut oil and stir it until it is melted

In a separate small bowl, stir together the arrowroot powder with 2 capsules of probiotics (open up the capsules and empty them into the bowl)

Pour the melted wax/coconut oil into the arrowroot/probiotic mixture and stir until everything is combined

Wait a minute or two for the mixture to cool slightly before adding in 4 drops of Lavender essential oil

Pour the whole mixture into a clean, sanitized glass jar. Once it is completely cool, put a lid on it and keep it in a cool, dark cupboard. If you want to speed up the cooling process, put it in the fridge until it sets up. A natural product like this should last several weeks, as long as you keep moisture and dirty hands out of the jar

When ready to use, scoop out a small amount with a popsicle stick or cotton swab, and apply it to the skin, rubbing it in until dissolved. Repeat daily, or as needed
